Setup Live Channels App on FireTV

Live Channels is a Android TV app from Google available only for Android TV devices. It’s mainly use to watch Live TV - news, sports, movies and TV shows from various channel sources such as built-in tuner, IP-based tuners, and more.

If you are a IPTV fan, few IPTV apps from Google Play Store support m3u playlist as channel source to Live Channels App. Currently supported apps include Cumulus TV, TVirl, Free IPTV, FreeViewIPTV etc.,

I like TVirl app as it supports m3u playlist and EPG (Electronic Programming Guide) as well. With TVirl as channel source, Live Channels app also gets EPG if you configure in TVirl and you can record the future shows natively provided you have enough storage on your device.

Coming to Fire TV devices where Google Play Store is not available, you can sideload Live Channels and any or all IPTV supported apps with each such app acts as a channel sources.

Steps:
  • Sideload Live Channels and TVIrl using Downloader app on Fire TV. You can also get the current versions from online. I explained Sideloading process in my previous post.
  • Launch TVirl app and proceed with on-screen instructions to add m3u playlist via local file or url. Also add EPG source url if you’ve one. See sreenshots.
  • Launch Live Channels app, tap and navigate to the settings section. Select Customize channel list, go to TVirl section, select group or individual channels from your playlist. See screenshots.
  • You see your channels from your playlist from guide by tap and selecting Guide.  From Guide, you play a channel or just hit remote up/down buttons to navigate channels like old style of watching TV.
  • CC, PIP and history of recently watched channels also available by tapping when viewing a channel.
